Fabric Mayhem

Sewing Brats.

Penny and Tucker were anything but helpful sewing buddies this evening. OMG. I don’t know what got into the two of them but they were total…animals! Still, I had to giggle at them. I must have plopped them off my desk 100 times. It was a game to them. Up. Down. Up. Down. Up. Down. I also had to seriously reprimand them a couple of times. Tucker decided that the pin cushion (complete with pins) looked like a super awesome chew toy and Penny desperately wanted to play with the hot iron. I swear I couldn’t turn my back on them for 2 seconds! At one point Tucker jumped on my foot while I was using the foot pedal and the needle went zooooooooommmmmm…..

No kitties were harmed (Thank God!) in the making of this envelope/purse/wallet thingee.

The goal is to make a bunch before Christmas to house gifts. I’m trying to not use any wrapping paper this year, everything will be reusable. Wonder how that will work out…

*Don’t look too closely, had to do that buttonhole three times! Yikes.

** Sorry for the crappy pics, it’s late!

That’s for HOUSING the gift? Not the gift itself? You and Martha Stewart really piss me off sometimes. ;-)

  2. Jean Martha Says:

    LOL!!

  3. pam Says:

I’m with Dahlila those are fantastic. Could you post the instructions some time?

  4. Emily Says:

That’s beautiful! How long did it take you to get the flowers to match up? I second the request for instructions and echo Dahlila’s comment.

  5. Jean Martha Says:

Flowers to match up!??! I assure you that was a total (happy) accident. When that happened I giggled my head off…

I’m making more tomorrow so I’ll post instructions with better pictures then.

  6. Kim Says:

Looks great. I have yet to even try a buttonhole, so congrats!

My mom started making fabric drawstring bags last year for christmas, too. It’s a great idea.

  7. Jane @ Beach House Says:

You matched it all up! Those are gonna be awesome and amazing gifts. I predict lots of followers wanting to be BFF before winter…

Bad kitties! But the product did not suffer ONE BIT for all of their mischievousness. The envelopes are beautiful–love the patterns! Maybe one of these could be up for grabs in one of your give-aways sometime? Pretty please?

Well, your name is Jean MARTHA so we shouldn’t be surprised at your skill level/creative abilities. Who wouldn’t like a gift packaged so beautifully!

  10. Barbara H. Says:

I agree – this would make a wonderful gift in itself. It would be great to have some kind of braid or chain or whatever to give it a strap. Perhaps one that could be detached – loop closure or something? Gosh – maybe I’d better stop working in the garden and start sewing…

The sewing gods, if not the sewing kitties, were certainly with you in the happy match up of the flowers. The fabrics inside and out are fantastic – love them!

  11. Jean Martha Says:

I may or may not have started FOURTEEN of them this morning.

    I should go like, take a shower…P.U.

I’m ok with the buttonholer but I have yet to master zippers. There’s a zipper class this weekend in the city but it’s SOLD OUT and they aren’t offering it again this fall. WTF? If it’s sold out, perhaps there’s a demand? Sigh…

  13. Betsy R Says:

The bags are wonderful! I finally overcame my issues with zippers when I learned the masking tape method. Use masking tape to hold everything in place just so. Then simply sew over the tape and pull it off when you’re finished. I really works! Good luck!

  14. Betsy R Says:

BTW, how big is the first bag? I’m trying to figure out what size I would need to hold most presents.

  15. drwende Says:

I can testify to the effectiveness of Betsy R’s masking tape zipper-insertion method, though I learned to do it with Scotch tape. I am a legendarily inept sew-er who can barely manage a straight seam, but I can put in a zipper accurately with this method (why I would need to, when I can’t sew anything else, is one of those convoluted family stories).

  16. Brenda Kula Says:

Well isn’t that cute! I know, the fur babies can be annoying. But then what would life be like without their little escapades to entertain us!

  17. Jean Martha Says:

My buttonholer seems to be on strike, just totally crapped up 2 of the bags. Argh!

  18. Barbara H. Says:

Hey, can you use Velcro and sew a button on the front? Might solve your problem….

  19. heidi Says:

You can go all Etsy on those fancy bags!

  20. Jean Martha Says:

Etsy is a pain in the ass. I can’t stand the process of uploading photos, etc. I’d rather just sew for family & friends.
