Flea Market Finds

DJ Mix A Lot

I’ve decided to become a club dj. My name will be DJ Mix A Lot. What? You don’t like it? OK, how about DJ Kitty Litter? No? No good? DJ Funky Feet? I’ve been told that my feet get a but *funk* if I wear wet leather shoes. Fine…whatever…

Friday night I picked up the Fiance and we ran off to Wilmington, Delaware. The plan was to do some shopping in Wilmington on Saturday in the morning and then race over to Lancaster/Adamstown in Pennsylvania to hit the flea/farmers markets.

Rain. Rain. Pouring Freakin’ Rain.

The Fiance was a trooper, he let me drag him to Calico Corners, Hayes Sewing Center, Goodwill and Salvation Army. He unleashed some serious coupon anarchy and the trunk of the car was filled to capacity. Fiance picked up lots of (all free after coupon!) tuna fish, moisturizer, first aide kits, baby powder, q-tips, deodorant, cat food and cat litter. Much of this will go to a local shelter.

So what did I nab at my favorite haunts?

At Hayes Sewing Center (awesome store!!) I picked up a new-to-me sewing machine – the Singer 9940.

It’s a floor model so I got a great deal on it and it has a warranty/trade in opportunity. This new machine has so many bells & whistles it will take me a long time to master it. Still, I was ready for a better machine! The suggested retail on the machine is $1299, I paid $299. Awesome, right? Hayes has some enormous quilting machines that look more like nautilus machines. I took pictures and will post them later this week.

Fabric…the first block is fabric I bought at Hayes. Most of it will be used for the *manly* bags for nephews, brother-in-law, etc. The second block is fabric I picked up at Calico Corners. That white with red thread/embroidery fabric and the yellow ticking…make me swoon!

I was milling around the Goodwill when one of the workers brought out this mixer.

I nearly yanked it out of his arms. OMG. Yes! I can’t wait to bake my fool head off with this. I have been hand-mixing for a million years and coveting KitchenAid mixers. To have an awesome vintage one? Even better! It weighs about 5 gazillion pounds. Cost? Thirty clams.

Also picked up these fun brass bookends for $5. What can I say? They spoke to me.

Considering the loot we found, kinda glad it rained!

Awesome deal on the mixer. Are you sure it’s vintage old? I have a new-ish one (less than 10 years) and yours looks very similar.

Even better, if the new attachments will fit yours, you can buy stuff to shred cheese, make your own pasta, grind meat, etc.

NO FREAKIN WAY! A Kitchen AIDE? SCORE! I have tried for 2 years to pick up one at the thrift store. I have one but would love to have a back-up. I’m kind of a horder when it comes to mixers. Anyway I am so jellassed!

What a steal on that MIXER! Lucky about about having a patiente fiance, brought mine to Brinfield in May, and he was a BRAT! Made sure I never bright him again. I still found great stuff…

  4. Tami Says:

OK. A Kitchen Aide, fancy schmancy seweing machine AND a Fiance that uses coupons. You are the luckiest girl alive! You can call your club anything you want. I will join.

  5. Jean Martha Says:

It’s a K45, Hobart/Kitchenaid. Near as I can tell they are from the early 1960’s. I’ll have to type up the serial number to be sure. It also include a bunch of attachments! Total score.

  6. LuAnn Says:

Dear God Woman, I was going to blog about my thrifty finds from last week but now I’m a bit embarrassed to! That mixer is so unbelievable. Have you sold that bear pitcher yet? Imagine how much fabric you could buy with the winnings from that pitcher…

  7. kate Says:

Oh, man! You sure do have the midas touch. Even my teenager lusts for a KitchenAid and all she bakes are the sporadic brownies for her friends.

  8. Jenni Says:

    WHAT !
    Great find on the mixer.

  9. randall meek Says:

OMG that mixer – awesome. i have so wanted a yellow one my whole life.

  10. Betsy R Says:

Great score on the mixer! The attachments are what really drive up the price of a kitchenaid mixer. Did you get any cool speciality attachments, like for making pasta or grinding food? I have an older model Kitchenaid given to me by a relative. It’s possible to get attachments for any of the models, both new and used.

  11. Jean Martha Says:

    Yup! Three attachments…

First time here…thru flickr…LOVE your new mixer…great find…great buy! I have a newer model that I got as a gift for my 30th bday this year. I love it! Happy baking!

  13. Michele Says:

Oh how I covet a KitchenAid, excellent score.

  14. TheSunflower Says:

Rats! Too bad your mixer didn’t come with extra accessories, just the basic three attachments. Lots of good used accessories available – just be sure they’re for the model you bought – not all interchangeable. How neat that the mixer is yellow – great for your upstate kitchen!!! I think it must have been meant for you…

  15. Marilyn Says:

Good lord, the things you find. I’m convinced you were a bloodhound in a former life! There will be no stopping you in the kitchen now – the cupcake frosting is going to fly.

  16. Hana Says:

Wow. If I live in the east, I’d be stalking you everytime you go to a thrift shop.

  17. Newburgh Restoration Says:

OMG I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO jealous! You have 2 things I REALLY REAlLY want! The sewing machine and the mixer! $30! That is awesome. They go for over $200 nowadays. It seems retarded to buy a new one when you can get a vintage one. I’m going to start digging! And the yellow is so purdy!

  18. Barbara H. Says:

Oh man, Jean Martha – what a scoop – no, many, many scoops. So jealous about the mixer – but really, really love the phoenix bookends! They are awesome.

  19. laura @ the shore house Says:

Wild applause from the shore house!! :-) Deal and a HALF on that mixer (the Kitchen Aid mixer changed my life. For reals. I have two of them…it was the first thing I bought for the shore house…it’s just that good. It may be a little over the top to have two, but…well, it’s better than having a crack habit.).

I am, however, afraid that the combination of the mixer and the fancy pants new sewing machine may turn Jean Martha into a hermit. I feel a Grey Gardens-esque docu-drama in the making…”Caftans and Cake for Everyone! My Life on the Edge,” by Jean Martha.

    :-)

  20. Ted Says:

    I think you mean brothers-in-law, not brother-in-laws – LOL!!!

  21. Sarah Jackson Says:

Are you kidding me with the mixer?! Errrrrr. I mean, I’m happy for you. Really.

    ERRRRR.

    -Sarah

  22. Tiffany Says:

You will LOVE your KitchenAid. I have the pink one (naturally) and it never gets put away b/c I’m never not using it. What a find!
