The contractor is hard at work but he can’t paint the floor till I tell him what color to paint it. I can’t tell him what color to paint it till I know what color the phucking countertop is. Every countertop I have picked out that I actually LIKE has been too expensive. I found a couple of Silestone countertops that I like – Yellow Nile and also Kalahari. They ended up being MORE EXPENSIVE than granite. At that point I just wanted to call Silestone’s office and yell a word that rhymed with knock-mucker or brother-trucker. If you’re going to manufacture something that’s fake and probably bad for the earth – at least make it CHEAP so that I can (almost) justify my part in global warming.
I have a headache. Here are pictures of the countertops I will NOT be getting because they price out at more than $4000.
I might just put butcher’s block down. That’s soooo lame. If I put butcher’s block down then I have to paint the floor (still a small chance we can sand & poly only) otherwise it will look like I live in the wilderness lodge at Disney World. Shitter Crappers.

Concrete is really cheap if you diy…but if someone does it and does those cool acid stains…it’s more expensive than granite – at least from everything I’ve read. It’s gorgeous though.

Have you tried Green Demolitions? Whatever you do, don’t go to Nelsons in Saugerties. We ended up taking them to court a few years ago over a limestone countertop they botched.

I know, I know – countertops paralyzed me for months. Finally went with Corian which I know you are not too excited about, but they do have some pretty neat stuff that looks just like fake silestone – so you have the fake imitating the fake. Don’t you people out East have all sorts of demo options where you can go pick up a brand new kitchen that some millionaire just tore out of his brand new mansion because he didn’t like the hinges? Or you could just close your eyes and point at a formica chip. Then in a few years get what you really want. Hey I am full of stupid advice today – want anymore???

I checked with Green Demo but they currently only have a black granite counter avail. While it’s cheap, when I end up paying for the contractors time to go retrieve it in Bethel and/or rent a truck myself the savings is minimal – and I don’t want black counters.
So I think I am going to “cheap out” a little. Listen, this isn’t the kitchen of my dreams. It never will be. Someday, I will have the kitchen of my dreams with creamy white cabinets and brushed nickel hardware and White Marble Carrera counters with deep grey and tan veins. Someday it will happen.
So, I think I am going to paint the floor creamy white (ala Sweden) and put in cheap IKEA butcher block countertops. At least the butchers block will blend in with everything and not be overly noticable.
Deep breath! Deep breath!

Hey, someone on Brownstoner did their own zinc countertop! Are you sure you don’t want zinc?

The butcher block will look great it’s so classic and warm…i did see the zinc countertop rh mentioned on brownstoner and it looks seriously amazing, as in i am thinking about buying a remnant sheet of the zinc and having our contractor cover our counters with it….They are cool in a old school industrial way and they have so much character.we did paint all of our cabinets in creamy white paint, installed brushed nickel hardware and painted our kitchen walls a deep orange on some of the wals and a taupey grey on the others. The white cabinets really pop against the colors. we also did a black chalkboard wall for fun. we love it. makes us want to hang out in there now! you’ll so love your kitchen when it’s done, butcher block and all. Digging the porch paint on the floor. can’t wait to see it!
